A special stone sign is to be unveiled on National Trust land to mark the formal opening of the Queen’s Jubilee Woodland Walk. The ceremony, which will take place on the morning of Wednesday 26 October, is the conclusion of work that began in 2007 when Insurance Corporation celebrated its’ 25th anniversary and created a legacy project.

Insurance Corporation chairman and founder Peter Walpole says that the unveiling denotes a significant moment in Insurance Corporation’s history:

‘We believe that Insurance Corporation has played its part in developing the economic landscape in the islands over the years and we feel that it is important to acknowledge the tremendous support we have had from the local community. So we embarked on a number of different schemes including a major tree planting initiative on the island’s south coast. This took place in jubilee year, 2012, when Insurance Corporation staff along with Bailiff Sir Richard Collas, Martin Ozanne and Tony Spruce of the National Trust and members of Guernsey Trees For Life planted more than 300 oak and chestnut trees. Considering how exposed the cliff top site is most of the trees have done well over the past 4 years and the time is right to open the area to the general public officially.

‘The views and the walks are very special and with it being just 5 minutes from the airport it has a particular significance for me in doing something towards negating our carbon footprint. At Insurance Corporation we were delighted to make a financial contribution to the National Trust of Guernsey for the purchase of land on the south coast cliffs as we believe it is the responsibility of corporate institutions to help safeguard the remaining precious green areas in the islands for future generations.”
