Insurance Corporation is delighted to announce that entry for its 2016 Conservation Awards is now open.
The competition, now in its 26th year, is open to all islanders with entries sought from schools, individuals, businesses, leisure and conservation organisations.
There are several awards available:
- Overall winner – receiving £1,500
- Runner-up – receiving £1,000
- Peter Walpole People’s Choice Award – receiving £500 (which is voted for by the public through Insurance Corporation’s website)
- Young Conservationist of the Year Award – prize depends on size and scope of the project
- Manpower Award – a team from Insurance Corporation over a course of one day will lend a hand to further enhance or support a project
Where possible all shortlisted entries will be visited by a team of judges, which includes local environmentalists and representatives of Insurance Corporation, who will choose the prize winners.
‘Last year we created a new award, “Young Conservationist of the Year”, following judging day, to highlight the importance of inspiring the younger generation, no matter how large or small their project, to make a difference to our island. Here at Insurance Corporation we strongly believe in giving back to our community through our Conservation Awards and Healthcare Bursary. We hope to see many individuals of all ages entering our Conservation Awards this year,’ said Mandy Hunt, general manager of Insurance Corporation.
Entry forms are available HERE and must be made by 12 noon on Friday 6 May. Judging will take place on Wednesday 18 May in Guernsey, and 25th May in Jersey.
The Insurance Corporation Conservation Awards culminates with the winners being announced at a lunchtime ceremony for all the shortlisted entrants in Guernsey on Thursday 16 June, and Jersey on Wednesday 29th June.
Last year’s Guernsey winners were:
Top prize: Ronez, for the many green initiatives it has implemented at its quarry at Le Vardes.
Runner up: Harvey Adams for his tree-planting scheme at KGV as part of the Little Trees Project.
Manpower Award: Charity Edible Guernsey who will get a team from Insurance Corporation helping at the former Sandpiper Vinery in St Peters.
Peter Walpole People’s Choice Award: Harvey Adams whose project little trees gained the most votes.
Young Conservationist of the Year Award: Repeat entrant 8 year old Enzo Crowson won for his excellent bug hotel in his parents’ front garden.
Last year’s Jersey winners were:
Top prize – shared jointly between: National Trust of Jersey for their work on the former Pontin’s Holiday Camp at Plemont and Little Feet Environmental, whose work removing marine debris from Jersey beaches greatly impressed judges.
Manpower Award: Robert Ward for his efforts in studying and conserving the local grass snake and glow-worm population. Mr Ward’s project, which will be running until October 2016, seeks to determine the population of both species along with investigating their movements and habitat.
